Adam Driver Compares the Star Wars: Episode VIII Script to Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars: Episode VIII has some huge shoes to fill. Not only is it the follow-up to the wildly successful Force Awakens, which rebooted the franchise and introduced a whole new generation to Star Wars, but it's the second in a trilogy, just like the most popular installment in the franchise: Empire Strikes Back. Now, Adam Driver is not only teasing that the script is "great," but is comparing it to the beloved ESB.

In a new interview with Collider, Driver sung Rian Johnson's praises, and then discussed the script for the film (which Johnson wrote):
Opening quote
It's great. It's similar to how The Empire Strikes Back has a different tone. For that people always go "oooh, it's dark" but I don't know that it necessarily is. It's just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear. He trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity. He's not dumbing anything down for someone and that's really fun to play.
Closing quote

Granted, he's not going so far as to say that it's as good as Empire Strikes Back, but this still sounds promising. Although many would argue that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," great sequels generally have a different tone from their predecessors. And I'm guessing that he's not slyly hinting at that rumored "I am your father"-esque twist, but it would be really funny if he were.

Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
