That "Death by Dogs" Scene on Game of Thrones Was Almost Even More Graphic
Game of Thrones is nothing if not known for its brutal death scenes, but there are a handful that are even more memorably disturbing than the rest. Among them is definitely the untimely (but well-deserved) death of Ramsay Bolton, who was graphically killed by his own dogs. But according to the special effects company that handled the scene, Image Engine, the scene was originally intended to be even gorier.
"They shot the scene with multiple takes," explained Image Engine visual effects supervisor Mat Krentz. "They did a pass of the dog on green screen, then Ramsay on green screen, and then we also had a background plate, which we put together." Artists also created a CG jaw for Bolton, and animated it to reveal the flesh ripping between Ramsay's skin and gums.
Wow, does that evoke an image or what? The death we got was probably gory enough to sate most fans' bloodlust, and since GOT often draws criticism for veering into the sensational when it comes to violence (particularly sexual violence, but in general as well), this show of "restraint" may be for the best. Still, we can't deny that we're curious as to what that scene might have looked like if the special effects team had gone all-out on the gross-out shots. We imagine it would have looked something like Noah's death on The Walking Dead, for better and for worse.
