Pacific Rim: Maelstrom Casts Its Female Lead
The cast for Pacific Rim: Maelstrom is taking shape, and after the major coup of snagging John Boyega as the male lead, Legendary has cast his female co-star. According to Variety, actress and singer Cailee Spaeny will take the coveted role.

Spaeny is a relative newcomer, which is only fitting for such a cult franchise. She has a couple of indie acting credits to her name, but she's better known for her online singing videos. After achieving popularity and acclaim on her YouTube and Vimeo channels, she recently released her first single, "Fallin."

There's no word on who Spaeny would play, although she reportedly has a starring role. Boyega will play the son of Idris Elba's character from the original, while Scott Eastwood also has an undisclosed role. Ron Perlman has also been rumored to reprise his role from the first film as Hannibal Chau.

But the real question is: is this it for Rinko Kikuchi? Charlie Hunnam confirmed that he wouldn't be returning, but we had hoped that Mako Mori would be back for the sequel. There's room for two female leads, of course, but since there's often an unspoken female quota in action movies, this might be bad news for fans of the character.
