Game of Thrones Showrunners Won't Continue for Possible Spin-Off
Game of Thrones' expansive world could lead to almost an infinite number of stories, but sadly, the groundbreaking show will end after the eighth season. In the future, HBO has teased that they might order some kind of spin-off, most likely a prequel, so this might not be the end for fans. But it will be the end for showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who say they won't be involved in any other Westeros-set series.

"You might want to ask George [R.R. Martin] about that," Benioff said backstage at the Emmys (via TV Line). "It's a great world that George created. It's a very rich world. I'm sure there will be other series set in Westeros. But for us, this is it."

For his part, George R.R. Martin thinks it's very possible that there will be a prequel series (duh), but there's time to think about that yet.

Opening quote
"There's a wealth of material there, and I'm still writing more." But the current run of Game of Thrones - set for two more seasons at HBO - takes precedence, he said. "At the moment, we still have this show to finish, and I still have two more books to finish."
Closing quote

Considering how successful GOT has been, it would be more surprising if there weren't some kind of spin-off after the show has ended (although Westworld is already poised to fill the empty prestige genre slot). Usually, when shows have successful spin-offs, the original showrunners and/or creators are involved, so this is a little bit of a downer. But at the same time, the key component is George R.R. Martin's vision, so as long as it's still based on his source material, the idea of a prequel series has a lot of potential.
