Doctor Strange Confirmed to Appear in Avengers: Infinity War
Doctor Strange has always been a bit of an oddball within the Marvel Universe. Plenty of Marvel characters have supernatural powers, but few are quite as explicit about being an actual sorcerer as Strange. He's always had a niche audience, but now that the omnipresent, uber-popular force known as Benedict Cumberbatch has taken on the role, it might be Strange's gateway into the mainstream, especially now that Cumberbatch recently confirmed that he'll be appearing in the upcoming Avenger extravaganza, Avengers: Infinity War. Either way, fans are going to be seeing a lot more Cumberbatchian Strange-ness very soon.

Speaking to Express at a recent set visit, Cumberbatch discussed the "logistical challenge of aligning his schedule with those of Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany." He didn't specify which movie he was talking about, but the only time those actors will be in the same movie in the foreseeable future is Avengers: Infinity War (and/or the sequel).

Opening quote
"To get us all together will be quite something. That's why this character is being introduced, to open up the next chapter," he said. "So watch this space to see how that unfolds."

And to help boost buzz around Doctor Strange's debut in the MCU, Marvel has released a slew of new TV spots that show all of Strange's cool (and strange) powers: astral projection, magical energy bolts, and maybe even levitation. Check out the most recent trailers below!

One of the most interesting questions is how Doctor Strange will play into the whole Thanos situation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Strange's M.O. is defending Earth against any magical or mystical threats using his Eye of Agamotto, which has already appeared in Thor: The Dark World. Depending on how the movies play out, Strange could be a messenger that reveals the approach of Thanos, the intergalactic tyrant with a crush on the personification of Death. Or, as its been hinted, the Eye of Agamotto might actually be one of the Infinity Stones.

For those behind the curve when it comes to insanely complex, cross-medium arcs, the arrival of Thanos is pretty much the biggest event so far in the MCU. It parallels a similar storyline in the comics, which deals with a super-powerful being called Thanos attempting to impress Death by collecting the six Infinity Stones and slotting them into the Infinity Gauntlet, which will grant him ultimate power. Each Infinity Stone represents a different facet of the universe (Space, Mind, Reality, Power, Soul, and Time), and controlling one means controlling its associated power. And according to a couple hints dropped by producer Kevin Feige, Doctor Strange's Eye of Agamotto may be the Time Stone. Which means sooner or later, Thanos is going to be coming for the Doctor.

The bigger question, however, is whether Doctor Strange will turn out to be one of those obscure Marvel properties, like Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man, that ends up being something new, unexpected, and refreshing. Even if Strange doesn't have then name recognition of Iron Man or the Hulk, now is Cumberbatch's chance to build a new name for the Doctor.

Doctor Strange opens in theaters November 4, 2016, while Avengers: Infinity War will premiere May 4, 2018.
