Rogue One Reveals Jyn's Mother, New Characters, and The Meaning Behind The Title
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has a lot riding on it. It's the first of Disney's Star Wars "anthology" films, and Bob Iger has already called it an "experiment," one that he doesn't expect to do quite as well as Force Awakens. An added pressure is to live up to the legendary name of "Rogue One." There was some confusion surrounding that title, since at first Gareth Edwards wasn't even sure it was going to be the name of the rebel fighters in the movie:

Opening quote
"I'd been thinking about it...What does it mean? 'Rogue One' is a military call sign to some extent, but this is the first film that's gone off-piste and is not part of the saga – or the Anakin story – so it's the 'rogue' one, you know?...It's kind of describing [Jyn Erso] as well in a similar way...It has [all] these split, multiple meanings that made it feel like the right choice."
Closing quote

Today, however, it's been confirmed that "Rogue One" is indeed the name of the group in the film. So, case closed on the not-so-mysterious meaning of the title (thanks for muddying the waters, Gareth Edwards!) Today also brings a couple other revelations, the first being that Valene Kane, the actress from the TV series Thirteen and The Fall, will be playing Lyra Erso, Jyn Erso's mother.

Since Kane is actually younger than the actress playing Jyn, Lyra will probably be appearing in flashbacks rather than alongside her daughter. Meanwhile, Mads Mikkelsen will be playing Gale Erso, Jyn's father. Kane's a bit easier on the eyes than one of the new characters revealed to Making Star Wars today, Rebel Commando Pao:

Rebel Commando Pao is a Drabata, an amphibious race, and a member of the Rogue One team whose apparent battlecry is "Sa'Kalla!" Despite looking like a shriveled frog, he's apparently a capable enough fighter to join in the operation to steal the Death Star plans. Joining Pao, Jyn, and the rest of the squad are Moroff, a white, furry Wampa-looking mercenary who's chosen role is "heavy gunner." We'll see how long they survive.

So what exactly is the Rogue One team up against? Well, two new kinds of Stormtroopers have been unveiled: the Scarif Stormtrooper Commander and the Hovertank Driver. The Scarif Stormtrooper looks like a tan-colored version of the regular trooper with a slightly different helmet, and are apparently called "Shoretroopers," since they "patrol the beaches and bunkers" of the planet." The Hovertank Driver also has a cool new helmet. Strangely enough, it seems that early photos of the toy versions of both these troopers made it out on social media ahead of some of the actual set photos from MSW:
