Superheroes Overtake Princesses as Top-Selling Kids Halloween Costume

The times they are a changin'. After an eleven year run in the top spot, princess costumes are no longer the top-seller for kids this Halloween, as they have been replaced by superhero costumes.

According to a study done by the National Retail Federation, an estimated 3 million kids will don capes and masks while trick-or-treating this year, enough to put them ahead of number two princesses and number three animals. Adults are also feeling pretty super, as Batman characters (specifically Harley Quinn, Joker, and the Dark Knight himself) are the top-seller in their demographic. Oh, and for the Star Wars fans out there, your costumes are on the rise as well. Characters from a galaxy far, far away rank fifth among kids (Batman characters are fourth), and ninth for adults, where they're sandwiched between number eight pirates and number ten zombies, meaning that the Force has indeed awakened when it comes to Halloween costumes.

So what does all this mean? The data could be attributed to the changing role of women in society, or it could be due to the pop culture landscape this year. Or maybe it's a little of both. Frozen is getting a little long in the tooth, and no new Disney princesses will be unveiled until after Halloween when Moana debuts, but the year has been a banner one for superheroes with several of the year's top-grossing films being about costumed crimefighters. And yes, some of the most popular heroes at the movies this year were indeed women (Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn costumes being especially popular). But whatever the reason, I've got my costume picked out.
