The story of David Ayer's Suicide Squad goes something like this

David Ayers created a dark, gritty film about a team of DC villains in the same style as Training Day and his other films. The folks at Trailer Park put together a fun, edgy, witty trailer for the movie that promised fans madcap, light-hearted action. Zack Snyder's super dark, grim Batman vs Superman was criticized for being too dark, too grim, and not enough fun. Warner Brothers realized that Ayers's Suicide Squad  was about to do the same thing and ordered reshoots and heavy editing, bringing in the editors from Trailer Park to help. The result was a goddamn mess of a movie that disappointed a lot of fans and ended up getting panned by critics. Despite all that, we all loved Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.

The End. Or not?

Rumors have been floating around since before the release that there were two cuts of Suicide Squad: Ayers' original version and the version we got. Somewhere along the way, Jared Leto claims, a hell of a lot of Joker material was cut out, and while that stuff might be cool to see (depending on your feelings toward Leto), a lot of fans and movie critics just want to go A Beautiful Mind on the whole thing and figure out where things went so terribly wrong.

That's what makes the new announcement about the Suicide Squad Extended Cut so titillating—will it be more faithful to Ayer's original, dark, gritty cut, or just mix in extra material to the newer, theatrical cut? Will it contain more of the Joker footage? And the biggest question of all:

Will it be better than the movie we saw in theaters?

Here's the trailer for the Extended Cut:

Every DC fan saw the potential in bringing together a bunch of bad guys and making them the good guys. David Ayers had one vision of how that was supposed to go, and Warner Brothers had a different one. The Extended Cut may find a way to make it all work, but will it be the movie we all hoped it would be? We can only hope.
