James Wan Says Aquaman is a "Quest Story" Like Raiders of the Lost Ark
< >
Just last week, Zack Snyder unveiled the first picture of Amber Heard in costume as Mera, the Atlantean love interest of Aquaman. DC fans were generally pleased with the accuracy to her look in the comics, and how well her Heard's aesthetic seems to mesh with Momoa's. Yet Justice League will likely on give fans a taste of the two's relationship. For the full experience, they'll likely have to wait until 2018's Aquaman, helmed by James Wan.

Recently, ET caught up with Wan to get his thoughts on the upcoming film, and ask him what direction he planned to take the movie in.

Opening quote
I kind of don't want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I'm going for is like a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story. It's ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.

…I think Amber and Jason Momoa, in their moments in Justice League, (are) going to give the rest of the world a flavor of what their own standalone movie could be. And that is just scratching the surface of what I plan to do.
Closing quote

It sounds like Aquman is gearing up to be quite a different type of superhero film, and totally different from anything Wan has directed before. From his description, it looks like fans can likely expect something in the vein of Pirates of the Caribbean, but with Atlanteans instead of pirates. With a guy like Wan providing the visuals on a movie of that sort, there's a lot of potential for the film to blow fans away.

Though Aquaman has been the butt of many jokes in the past, Geoff Johns helped revamp the character in the New 52 era as a true force to be reckoned with. Dan Abnett's recent work with Aquaman has been of a similar style, and has continued to evolve the character down a less campy path. Momoa will pick up that legacy in 2017, and from those few shots in the Justice League first look teaser, he'll have no problem taking Aquaman in a new (but somewhat familiar) direction.

Aquaman is slated for a release on July 27th, 2018.
