The Walking Dead Premiere Just Beat Everyone to Death in the Ratings
The Walking Dead season 7 premiere was one hell of an episode, and the ratings are in. The show drew in 17 million viewers aged 18-49, which is The Walking Dead's second-highest rating to date, after its season 5 premiere, which drew in 17.3 million viewers.
The Walking Dead even outdid Sunday Night Football and any other show in the demographic, including fellow ratings juggernauts Big Bang Theory and Empire. AMC executives claim that the episode will likely set a new record for the series as well, once new forms of viewing are added in.
Season 7 opened with Negan at the bat and bases fully loaded. He swung two home runs into Abraham and Glenn. (Too soon?) Though we had to wait a quarter of the way into the episode to find out who was at the end of Lucille, this episode was incredibly gruesome and exciting (take a look at our review here). And in spite of fan outrage after the ending to season six, ratings were up 22% from the finale, so it looks like the cliffhanger had the intended effect.
The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9pm EST.
