Benedict Cumberbatch Plays Two Characters in Doctor Strange

Huge spoilers for Doctor Strange follow!

Benedict Cumberbatch is already receiving plenty of acclaim for his performance as Stephen Strange, but as it turns out, we'll get to see him play an entirely different character in the Marvel Universe. After the film came out in UK theaters today, director Scott Derrickson confirmed Cumberbatch's very spoiler-y dual role.

Possible spoilers ahead! (Click to reveal)

Speaking with IGN, Derrickson confirmed that Cumberbatch is playing both Doctor Strange and (drumroll please)... Dormammu!

That's right: in Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch plays both the hero and the villain. Fans have suspected that Dormammu would be involved in the film for some time now, possibly as the surprise Big Bad summoned by Mads Mikkelsen's Kaecilius, or maybe just in a post-credits scene that sets up the sequels. We still don't know the exact nature of his involvement, but we do know that Cumberbatch provides the motion capture for the character.
Opening quote
"The voice was a British actor whose name I don't know, and Benedict – Benedict did the facial capture for it," said Derrickson.
Closing quote

Derrickson explained that, as an interdimensional entity, Dormammu takes on Strange's likeness in order to communicate with him (and probably psyche him out):

Opening quote
"We knew it was an all CG character, but as we were in production Benedict brought it up as an idea. He said, 'What would you think about me doing it?' I said, 'Let me think about it, you know.'"

"It's an interesting idea, because I did fancy the idea that as this other-dimensional being he's not moving through the Dark Dimension, with a countenance, with eyes and a face, eyes and a mouth, and a human visage – why would he? He takes that form on to communicate with Strange."
Closing quote

We always knew that Dormammu would be the ultimate villain in the inevitable Doctor Strange sequels, but it looks like we'll be seeing even more of him - and Cumberbatch - than we thought. This sounds like a great, if wacky, twist, and we can't wait to see it when the film comes out on November 4.
