Marvel Is Making Changes for Gender Equality, Says Studio Exec
Hollywood has a gender equality problem, both on and off the screen. Studies showed that as of 2015, women represented only one-third of the speaking roles in the top 100 grossing films, and only one-fifth of the protagonists. Behind the scenes, women made up only 7% of the directors and 11% of the writers in the top 250 films in 2014

Now, at least one major studio is committing to changing those dismal statistics. Marvel's executive VP of physical production, Victoria Alonso, told a recent Women in Technology luncheon (via THR) that Marvel is "determined to make change," spearheaded by president Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D'Esposito.
Opening quote
"We have had gender inequality for some time. It wasn't always talked about .... In the past year, it bubbled up and it's no longer acceptable to women and some men," she said. "Change is needed and hopefully we can make a balanced Hollywood for the next generation.

Alonso didn't directly state that Marvel specifically has had a sexism problem in the past, but she heavily implied it:

Opening quote
"I don't want to be the only [woman] in the room," Alonso said. "Our rooms should be 50/50. If any of you - men or women - can lift [women] up, we'll all be better for it."

Marvel is already starting to make changes to its onscreen line-up, starting with the Captain Marvel movie and Wasp co-headlining the next Ant-Man movie. But they still have a long way to go in terms of diversity, for both gender and race, so it's encouraging to hear that they are committed to making changes. (Maybe this means we'll finally get that Joss Whedon-directed Black Widow movie?)

But making behind-the-scenes changes is equally important, and Alonso made an appeal to the men in the room to help make a change:

Opening quote
"You are important change makers. When you wonderful men say 'balance is necessary'…you open that door and the product is going to be better [with varied perspectives]."
