This Marvel Villain Was Almost the Big Bad of Doctor Strange
Spoilers for Doctor Strange follow!
Doctor Strange finally came out this weekend, and for those of you who avoided spoilers, the main villain was revealed to be Dormammu (played by Benedict Cumberbatch, funnily enough). Many fans were expecting/hoping for the classic comics villain to be the Big Bad, but apparently, that wasn't a foregone conclusion. According to director Scott Derrickson, an entirely different comics supervillain was almost the primary antagonist of Doctor Strange.
In a recent interview, Derrickson said that he originally wanted Nightmare, the evil ruler of the Dream Dimension in Marvel Comics, to be the main villain. But Kevin Feige talked him out of it:
"Kevin [Feige] made a very cogent case," Derrickson told Empire. "The trouble with starting with Nightmare is getting across the idea of the Dream Dimension as another dimension. The movie was challenging enough. It's already an exposition-heavy movie... Dormammu made the most sense. And he is the most present villain in the comics."
Nightmare is an awesome villain, so this is a little disappointing, especially considering how well Doctor Strange's trippy visuals would have suited the Dream Dimension. But now that Strange's mythology has been explained to the viewing audience, is there a chance that we'll see Nightmare down the road?
Unfortunately, that doesn't seem too likely. Dormammu was substituted for Nightmare not only because he's a popular comics character, but because they share superficial similarities. It would seem a little repetitive for Strange to fight another evil dimension ruler in the sequels, and they seem to be setting up Dormammu to be a major villain in the future of the MCU anyway. But still, we can dream (no pun intended).
Doctor Strange is now out in theaters.
