The New Rogue One Book Reveals the Hidden Connection Between Saw Gerrera and Jyn Erso
The history of the Death Star has always been a bit murky for hardcore Star Wars fans, despite it being arguably the most iconic piece of sci-fi from the movies (right behind Darth Vader's helmet and the lighstaber). The new Rogue One prequel novel Catalyst promised to clear that history up and bring it in line with the new movie: it follows Orson Krennic and the genesis of the Death Star, as well as the origins of its famous superlaser. Of course, we know that another character plays a huge part in that story—Jyn Erso's father, Galen Erso, who is ostensibly captured by Krennic in the trailers. But according to io9, there's one other player in Catalyst that no one saw coming: Saw Gerrera.

See, when we watched Director Krennic standing menacingly across from Jyn's father at the beginning of the second international trailer, it wasn't the meeting of two strangers. Galen and Orson were both scientific prodigies and went to the same academy as kids, with Galen going on to become a renowned scientist working with energy crystals. After the outbreak of the Clone Wars, Galen's family was targeted for kidnapping by the CIS so they could force him to work on a superweapon. Krennic actually helps to rescue the Erso family, but then he offers a job that proves too good to be true: he'll give Erso sanctuary on Coruscant, all the resources as he could ever want (including rare kyber crystals), and make him the head researcher on a project to create huge amounts of clean energy.

How much energy? Maybe just enough to destroy a planet.

After Galen realizes what Krennic is doing with all of his research, a veteran soldier approaches Galen's wife Lyra Erso and offers to transport the family into hiding on a planet called Lah'mu. That soldier (you guessed it!) is Saw Gerrera. Before leaving, Saw gives Jyn's mother a card that will allow her to contact him if they ever get into trouble. And, as we know, trouble does indeed find the Erso family. In the form of a vengeful Krennic and a small squad of Death Troopers.

So expect the reunion of Jyn and Saw to be a warm, bittersweet one. This is the man who tried to save Jyn's family, but the intercepted transmission from Galen proves that it was all in vain. Saw will probably realize the kind of pain and confusion Jyn's been working through since her father was taken, and may even become a mentor for her over the course of the movie, the way Obi-Wan was for Luke. Unfortunately, we all know what happened to Obi-Wan.

All things considered, the book gives some much-needed backstory on Krennic and the creation of the Death Star, while hinting at what may be an unexpected relationship between Felicity Jones and Forest Whitaker's characters in the movie. It's the best kind of spoiler: the kind that deepens your appreciation for what's ahead.
