Kong: Skull Island is not only meant to be a King Kong sequel, but to jumpstart a huge monster movie franchise that will eventually see Kong and Godzilla fight each other (somehow). Now, the first trailer has dropped, and it has tons of monsters and other fantastic creatures, not to mention a lot more humor and levity than we expected:

In the trailer, we see several lizard-type monsters, a gigantic head that looks like a dinosaur, a giant spider thing, a magic moose, and, of course, King Kong. Kong might actually be the least interesting part of this movie, especially if Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson are allowed to unleash their considerable charm and comedy chops. The trailer isn't exactly funny per se, but it does indicate that the movie has a sense of humor about itself, which is probably all you need to get you through a summer monster movie with these amazing visuals.

Here's the official synopsis:

Opening quote
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' "Kong: Skull Island" reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts ("The Kings of Summer").

In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific – as beautiful as it is treacherous – unaware that they're crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.
Closing quote

Kong: Skull Island hits theaters on March 10, 2017.
