New 'Logan' Photo Hints at the Death of Professor X
Most superhero movies get people excited by making a marketing campaign that's exciting and fun with a good dose of wit and explosions (i.e. Suicide Squad). Logan got people excited by creating the most tragic trailer for a movie since Old Yeller, complete with extra melancholy black-and-white photos of desolate wastelands on Instagram. If Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt hadn't been the perfect soundtrack for it, How It Ends by DeVotchKa or Deadman's Gun would have been good choices.

Because god knows it's not going to end happily. This is Hugh Jackman's last time playing Wolverine, which means odds are good he's not going to survive this one. As for Professor X, the odds are even worse—as the Hawkeye to Wolverine's Old Man Logan, he's got a giant target on his back. All this morbidity is supported by the new photo released by the official Logan Instagram account, WponX:

Bullet

We've got our best automobile experts hard at work determining what kind of car that is, but right now our best guess is that it's Logan's truck. Those bullet holes appear to be clustered around the passenger-side door for the back seat, where Professor X sits in the trailer. We also know that Logan and Co. get chased by a bunch of SWAT-looking guys in off-road POLICIA FEDERAL trucks, which are ostensibly the Reavers (who may or may not have bionic arms). The implication made by the photo is that somebody in Logan's truck gets shot, and Professor X is the most likely suspect.

Going back to the Hawkeye/Old Man Logan thing, this makes sense: in the comic, Logan drives across the U.S. with a blind, old Hawkeye (mirrored by an old, frail Professor X) after mutants have mostly gone extinct due to falling birth rates. They rescue a young girl (Hawkeye's daughter mirrors Laura Kinney's X-23). Along the way, Hawkeye gets shot and dies, while Logan heals from the wounds.

There is, however, another option: at 1:09 in the trailer we see what appears to be the bald head of Professor X convulsing in a chair (apparently inside the house we see at 1:12) while armed goons point guns at him. This could be a hint that Professor X stays behind in the house to mind-blast the Reavers closing in on them while X-23 and Logan escape. Either way, things don't look good for everybody's favorite cue-balled old telepath...

Let's go watch the trailer again and cry.

Logan hits US theaters on March 3, 2017.
