Wolverine Carries X-23 to Safety In the First Full-Color Photo from 'Logan'
In a marketing campaign dominated by melancholy, desolation, and the inevitable death of beloved old mutants, a new color still from Logan is a breath of fresh air. Aside from the trailer, everything from WponX Instagram photos to storyboards has been monochromatic and mostly cryptic. It's nice to see something relatively straightforward and hopeful: a burly mutant werewolf man carrying a young, handcuffed girl in his arms while a truck burns in the background.

But seriously, this is a really cool shot. We've got what appears to be a dead body in the grass behind Logan, a blood-soaked tank top that seems a bit more shredded than when we saw it at 1:36 in the trailer, and X-23 (aka Laura Kinney) in the same outfit we saw her when she slips her hand in Logan's (at 1:33 in the trailer). It's hard to tell when in the film this photo occurs, but we're guessing it's later in the movie, judging by Logan's beard and appearance. Noticeably, Professor X is nowhere to be seen.
It's a touching photo partly because of Logan and Laura's parallels: according to the comics, X-23 was a female clone of Wolverine, created after the Weapon X scientists couldn't salvage the Y chromosome in his DNA. We haven't seen X-23's claws yet, and it may be that Logan and Professor X were able to save her before the experiments got that far. X-23 was canonically raised in captivity and bred to be a weapon (they even conditioned her to go into a berserker rage when she sensed a certain scent), but the Laura Kinney we've seen so far appears to be a relatively well-adjusted little girl, though there's a still a chance she's a little murderous Eleven (Stranger Things) underneath the rainbow shirt and cute sunglasses. If that's the case, it may already be too late.
Logan premieres in US theaters on March 3, 2017.
