There Will Be No 'Rogue One' Sequel
If you were hoping for a sequel to Rogue One, forget it. It's not gonna happen.

Speaking to Empire, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy revealed that there will be no "Rogue Two," and that Star Wars' first standalone movie will be just that. Apparently, the plan (at least right now) is to keep the anthology films as one-and-dones, with no pressure to build separate franchises around them. As for the reasoning behind this decision, that's where things get a little murky.

Some have said the reason is that a sequel to Rogue One already exists with Star Wars: A New Hope, since the new film takes place right before the events of that one. But Rogue One isn't a true prequel, because it deals with entirely different characters. A sequel to Rogue One wouldn't tell Luke Skywalker's story, it would continue to tell the story of Jyn Erso and the rest of the characters introduced in the new film. So why is a sequel already being ruled out?

If the movie is a big success, which tracking suggests it will be, then it would make business sense for Disney to want to continue the franchise, but there may be a practical reason for not doing so. Some fans have theorized that the film portrays a suicide mission, and if that is indeed the case, then there presumably wouldn't be any characters left alive to follow in a sequel.

Whatever the reasoning behind it, one thing is clear: There's not going to be a sequel to Rogue One.
