Arrow Boss Previews the End of the Flashbacks in the Season 5 Finale
Arrow just passed its 100th episode (with great success, we might add), and now it's time to look forward to the next milestone in the show: the fifth season finale, which was originally when the powers-that-be envisioned the show ending. Originally, showrunner Marc Guggenheim said he planned to bring the show full circle in the series finale, with Oliver seeing the boat that rescued him in the last shot. So what will they do now that Arrow will likely go on for at least two more seasons?
Opening quote
"Spoiler alert. That's going to end up being the Season 5 finale," Guggenheim told TVLine.
Closing quote

According to Guggenheim, the flashbacks will finish up in the finale with the first shot from the pilot, and that that was the plan for the series finale when they only dreamed of lasting for five years:

Opening quote
"It was really just a hope at that point [in 2012] that the show would run five years," he said, "and we always thought that we would intercut the final moment of the series with the first moment of the series, that it would form one big Moebius strip.

There's still a part of me that wishes we could do that. But I wouldn't want to artificially extend the flashbacks [beyond five seasons], and I also wouldn't want to artificially cut the show short. It would've been a beautifully elegant thing, and Five Years Ago Me would've loved it. But things change, and I do think it'll make the Season 5 finale pretty awesome."
Closing quote

Bringing the show full circle is usually the job of the series finale, and it would have been "elegant," as Guggenheim said. But at the same time, we're not complaining, because the flashbacks have long overstayed their welcome. Maybe they'll pull a Lost on us and start doing flash forwards, but we'd be happy if we just saw the current timeline.

Arrow airs on Wednesdays at 8pm on The CW.
