New 'Logan' Photo Reveals Dr. Zander Rice, Leader of the Weapon X Program
With a new trailer for Logan on horizon, one of the big things we're looking forward to learning about is Laura Kinney, aka X-23. In the comics, X-23 was Wolverine's female clone, created by the Weapon X Project after Wolverine escaped and murdered the project's head, Dale Rice. The two people behind X-23's creation were Dr. Martin Sutter and Rice's son, Dr. Zander Rice, who never forgave Logan for killing his father. It wasn't clear how much we'd get to know about Weapon X or the people involved in it, but today we got this not-so-cryptic tweet from Hugh Jackman, showing Richard E. Grant with the caption "Rice. Logan. 3.3.17":

It's pretty clear that Grant will be playing Zander Rice in the upcoming film, which means we'll probably be returning to explore how the Weapon X program has developed since Logan escaped (and tore it up on his way out). We'll also hopefully get some insight into Laura's origins, which may or may not include the berserker rage-inducing "trigger scent" introduced in the comics. No footage has been shown yet of X-23 in captivity or anything resembling a laboratory setting that could be the Weapon X project's HQ (aside from Professor X's medical facilities), but the appearance of Caliban hints that part of Logan may be a rescue mission to free X-23 from the program.
The saga of Rice, Sutter, Weapon X, and Sarah Kinney, who lends X-23 her name, is a long and sordid one, filled with lies, treachery, and one severely scarred little girl. Aside from whether X-23 has her dual claws, the most pressing question (and emotionally loaded one for Logan himself) may be whether he's arrived too late to save another person from having their innocence stolen from them by the Weapon X Project. In the comics, X-23 has already killed dozens of people by the time she escapes the program and becomes a prostitute that frequently mutilates herself to deal with her anxiety and trauma. Since the X-23 we see in the trailer is still very young, we can hope that Logan's last ride will save X-23 from becoming the haunted, Johnny Cash-themed murder machine he's turned into (though he may not be able to save Professor X). Gosh this is a sad movie.
Logan hits US theaters on March 3rd, 2017.
