Ryan Reynolds Promises Deadpool 2 Will Be Just as Scrappy as the Original
We reported on the much-publicized departure of Tim Miller from Deadpool 2 as well as Ryan Reynolds' thoughts on the man who turned Deadpool into a surprise mega-hit, but now that David Leitch is in the saddle, all is as it should be. We're still waiting to hear who will be cast as Cable and the female mutant Domino, but in an interview with EW, Ryan Reynolds opened up about what to expect from the new film and why Leitch is still the best fit for the director's seat:

Opening quote
"Everbody was just a fan of his work...He's just a guy who's so muscular with his action. He also really understands those Deadpool sensibilities and where we need to take the franchise from here. And I love John Wick. One of the things that David Leitch does that very few filmmakers can do these days is they can make a movie on an ultra tight minimal budget look like it was shot for 10-15 times what it cost."

This was the heart of the "creative differences" that ended up driving a wedge between Miller and Reynolds: whether Deadpool 2 was going to stick to the small-budget scrappiness that forced the first one to focus on character rather than special effects, or balloon into the kind of big-budget superhero action movie franchise that it made a name poking fun at. Producer Simon Kinberg reinforced the point:

Opening quote
"The goal for us when we sat down and started talking about it was it needs to be as provocative and startling as the first film which means it can't just be a continuation of the first film...It has tonally and stylistically be as fresh and original. That's a big challenge especially because they had 10 years to gestate on the first movie and we don't have that kind of time on the second movie...We have to...stay true to the tenets of it's the tone and the style and the humor that make it so special-it's not the explosions and the special effects."
Closing quote

It's reassuring to see how seriously both Reynolds and the team are taking a superhero film that's based on not giving a fuck. We've covered Reynolds' Deadpool-Wolverine joke feud in the past and the silly celebrity antics Taylor Swift had with his (?) suit this past Halloween, but at heart we all know that Reynolds cares deeply about this project and making sure it doesn't turn into another bloated SFX-driven X-Men (or Green Lantern) disaster. The original one had so much great material that some of it had to be cut, and so many loving tributes and Easter eggs that even fans who were sick of "chimichangas!" cracked smiles.

Most importantly of all, there's one person who would never let the Deadpool team live down ruining the series: Deadpool himself.

Deadpool 2 is set to hit US theaters in on January 12th, 2018.
