Donald Glover Talks Playing Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo Anthology Film
Though Rogue One may be getting all the hype right now, the new Star Wars film's success definitely gives hope that the franchise's second standalone movie, the Han Solo anthology project, will also succeed in recapturing the magic of a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller start principal photography in just a few months, and the recent castings of Emilia Clarke in an unknown role and Donald Glover in the part of Lando Calrissian have most fans hopeful and enthusiastic that a movie about a young Han Solo and his journeys won't be a train wreck. Recently, Glover spoke about his part and his approach to playing Lando in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Opening quote
It was the first action figure I ever had. I remember my dad giving it to me…I remember Lando really well. He was like the only black guy in space. And he was the cool one. I just realized, he still has to be cool. And cool is an interesting thing. It changes…I was watching Black Mirror, and there's an episode where they go through time and in the '50s, there's a nerd, and by the time he gets to the 2000s, he's just a hipster. He's not a nerd anymore. Cool changes depending on the perspective. Also, it's fun because [the Han Solo movie is set] before [Empire Strikes Back], so he's still figuring it out a little bit, which is fun.
Closing quote

Of course, having such a strong emotional attachment to the character will likely serve Glover's efforts well. He's already a phenomenal actor with an impressive repertoire, but seeing him act in a part he's this enthusiastic about should hopefully be a real treat. It'll also be interesting to see just how he approaches being "the cool one," and even though his comments seem to imply that he's going to bring his own vibe to the character, hopefully he succeeds in recapturing some of that Billy Dee Williams' cape-wearing coolness, too.

The untitled Han Solo standalone film will premiere on May 25, 2018.
