Katherine Waterston Looks a Lot Like Ripley in This New 'Alien: Covenant' Photo
Everybody remembers the uber-tense elevator scene from Aliens, when Ripley takes off her jacket, straps on those bandoliers, and hefts the biggest gun outside of a Gears of War cosplay. Sigourney Weaver has since become one of the coolest, bravest heroines in sci-fi, and with a new Alien movie on the horizon, a call-back to the classic seems appropriate. Here's Katherine Waterston, the new star of Alien: Covenant, looking awfully Ripley-like:
In an interview with Waterston, she spoke about her role as Daniels, the lead character of the movie, and said that one of her favorite parts about playing the character was her 'journey'. She describes Daniels as someone who has never been tested, and explains that the terror and danger of the movie eventually allows her to realize that when the chips are down, she can be relied on to keep calm...and kick ass. This is a different kind of character arc from the scientists in Prometheus, who took turns trying to find the stupidest ways to die on an alien world.
With all that in mind, the elevator scene from Aliens evokes even more parallels between Ripley and Daniels: the scene is essentially showing Ripley steeling herself and trying to keep cool, calm, and collected before taking on the Alien Queen with a flamethrower. This is the moment where other people would buckle and break down—on the verge of the final confrontation, right before biting the bullet (or pilot light). But it sounds like both Daniels and Ripley share the same determination and will to throw down with xenomorphs, the most terrifying things since...well, anything. Either way, it's a good thing Daniels learns how to chew bubblegum and kick xenomorph ass, because Covenant is apparently introducing three new species of them.
...Waterston may need a bigger gun.
Alien: Covenant hits US theaters May 19, 2017.
