'Rogue One' Flies Past One Billion Dollars at the Box Office
It's been close to 40 days since Rogue One opened in theaters, and being a Star Wars film, there were high expectations for how financially successful it would be. Was it successful? If you consider $1 billion internationally to be a victory, then yes.

Saturday, January 21 marked the official day when Rogue One joined the billions club, having opened a month and a week earlier on December 16. Of that $1.01 billion, about $512 million came from domestic releases within the United States, while $499 million came in from overseas. And as of this writing, the movie is still 6th in the box office for this weekend, so that number is likely to rise even if the momentum is dying down.

This makes it the third Star Wars film to cross that line, following The Force Awakens at $2.07 billion and The Phantom Menace at $1.02 billion. In general, Rogue One concluded a very good year for Disney as its fourth film that year to break a billion, after Captain America: Civil War, Finding Dory, and Zootopia, although Rogue One still tops them all in domestic sales. It certainly helps when you own Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios and Pixar all at once.

Either way, this will all but ensure more anthology-style Star Wars films in the future, long after the Han Solo film comes out in 2018.
