Fan Favorite 'Rogue One' Characters are Getting Their Own Novels
When Disney and Lucasfilm announced the Star Wars Expanded Universe was no longer canon, one major victim was the wealth of Star Wars novels that have been written over the decades, although not really because you can still buy and read them. Fortunately, two new Rogue One novels for a new Expanded Universe are on the way, one about the film's heroine Jyn Erso and one about the scene stealing duo Chirrut and Baze.

The first novel is called Rebel Rising, by sci-fi author Beth Revis, and will be a young adult tale about Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) during the one era of her life the film never really showed: the years she spent with Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) and his army of extremist Rebels. But her time with Gererra aside, Rogue One covers her life story top to bottom, so we probably won't learn too much new information about her.

On the other hand, there's the second middle-grade novel called Guardians of the Whills, by comic-book writer Greg Rucka. This will be all about the Jedha temple guardians and BFFs Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), who join up with the Rogue One crew after the Empire wipes out their temple and the chunk of Jedha it was sitting on.

Despite being part of the main team, we never learn much about either beyond that they bicker but are still inseparable, and that Chirrut is the Force and the Force is with him. The blind and snarky Chirrut also won himself a lot of fans thanks to Yen's insane stormtrooper-kicking skills.

Here's the official synopsis of Guardians of the Whills, which will also include Gerrera bringing some chaos with him.
Opening quote
Baze and Chirrut used to be Guardians of the Whills, who looked after the Kyber Temple on Jedha and all those who worshipped there. Then the Empire came and took over the planet. The temple was destroyed and the people scattered. Now Baze and Chirrut do what they can to resist the Empire and protect the people of Jedha, but it never seems to be enough. When a man named Saw Gerrera arrives with grand plans to take down the Empire, it seems like the perfect way for Baze and Chirrut to make a real difference and help the people of Jedha. But will it come at too great a cost?
Closing quote

Both Rebel Rising and Guardians of the Whills will go on sale May 2, 2017.
