The Terminator series has gone through some ups and downs since creator and director James Cameron stepped away. While the first two films (both directed by Cameron) remain masterpieces in science fiction and action circles, the films that have come since have met with fair box office success but diminished crowd and critic interest.

Now, Cameron might be interested in returning to the franchise, with rumors that he might oversee a new production with Deadpool director Tim Miller tapped to direct. Cameron, who is still currently working on somewhere between 1 and 100 new Avatar movies, believes that the lessons and guiding principles behind the original Terminator movies can and must be re-visited.

As he told The Daily Beast in a wide-ranging interview, Cameron believes that if anything our society has become so reliant on technology and machines that a new Terminator might be even more relevant than when he first created it over 30 years ago. Though he admits the later films might have lost the initial idea by becoming more and more obsessed with action and special effects, the central notion, of 'humans versus technology' and how they actively dehumanize themselves in the process, just needs to be brought back to the foreground.

It remains to be seen if any of the talks and negotiations lead to an upcoming film, but if anyone can breathe new life into the franchise, it's Cameron.
