Here's Our First Look at the New Jaegers in 'Pacific Rim: Uprising'
In addition to seeing our first official photo of John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, the movie's lead character, we've now been treated to an initial look at three brand-new Jaeger designs:
These Jaegers certainly look a lot more sleek and streamlined than the clunkier designs we saw in the original Pacific Rim, which certainly makes sense considering that, in the first movie, the heroes were mostly relying on very outdated technology, as the rest of the world had all but abandoned the giant robotic approach to Kaiju in favor of building an ineffective giant wall.
Clearly humanity has embraced the Jaegers as an effective Kaiju defensive approach in the time since the first movie, and has poured money into some sleeker designs. Longtime fans of science fiction stories about mechs, particularly anime fans, will notice that these designs—particularly the red Jaeger on the left—look very similar to the EVA units from the hit series Neon Genesis Evangelion.
It's hardly surprising that these designs for the new Pacific Rim mechs would be influenced by Evangelion—the movie series has always worn its inspirations on its sleeve, and Japanese monster movies have clearly been at the heart of the franchise since the beginning.
