The ‘Aquaman’ Movie Has Been Swept Back to Christmas 2018
Warner Bros. just announced that the release date of Aquaman has been pushed back yet again. The film was originally supposed to debut in July 2018, was then delayed to October 5, and now has a new date of December 21 next year. Aquaman doesn't seem like a Christmas movie, but it may become one now.
Warner Bros. has been quiet as to what caused the postponement, although this double delay isn't the first hiccup for the DC Extended Universe (The Batman comes to mind). Marvel Studios has been successful in delivering box office successes for some time now, and DC has frequently been late to the party. Both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were able to pull people into theaters, but came up short in quality.
Aquaman will feature Game of Throne's Jason Momoa (who played Khal Drogo) in the title role and The Get Down's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as villainous Black Manta. Fortunately, we won't have to wait over a year and a half to see how Momoa handles the iconic role, as he'll play a big part in Justice League, which premieres November 17, 2017. If Warner Bros. wants to toughen up Aquaman for their DCEU, then Khal Drogo seems as good a choice as any.
Coincidentally, the new date happens to be the original release date for Avatar 2, before that movie was further delayed. When James Cameron announced that the 20th Century Fox film was in no shape to premiere Christmas 2018, Warner Bros.may have jumped at the opportunity to have Aquaman come out over the holidays. Aquaman will now share a release date with Sony's untitled animated Spider-Man movie, which is cool with us and won't be competing with the live action Aquaman just as much. The way we see it: one trip, two showtimes.
Hopefully Aquaman won't experience anymore setbacks; Ben Affleck's perpetually delayed The Batman seems to have bad press covered in the DC Universe for now.
Aquaman is scheduled to come out December 21, 2018.
