‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Promo Shows Star-Lord Explaining a Walkman
In the times of smartphones and Bluetooth, we hardly remember the iPod nano from 2005, let alone Walkman Cassette Players from the 1970s. But don't tell that to Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), the goofy protagonist of Guardians of the Galaxy who brought along his Walkman after being abducted from Earth.
The oldies on that Walkman like "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell ended up being a significant part of the first film, introducing the old gizmo to a number of younger fans. Beyond being the only item he had left from his late mother, Star-Lord's "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" also managed to make the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack a best-seller.
So to promote their upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 this May, Marvel released a video featuring Pratt/Star-Lord explaining what exactly a Walkman is to younger Marvel fans. "You start it at the beginning, you end it at the end," says Peter Quill, "You listen to a tape as if you were sitting at a concert." Ah, how far technology has come since the '70s.
"They called it a Walkman, 'cuz you put it on your head, and you can walk, man." Pretty cool invention, perhaps not as cool as the quad blaster though. This promo follows plenty of trailers and TV spots, and most recently, an educated guess on who Sylvester Stallone will be playing.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will hit theaters, Walkman and all, on May 5, 2017.
