Marvel and Freeform Release Trailer for Young Adult Show ‘Cloak & Dagger’
Freeform, the edgy rebranded version of ABC Family, has released a trailer for its upcoming Marvel show, Cloak & Dagger.
The superhero series will follow Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) as they discover their new superpowers and the link from their past that brings them together. Like in the comics, the two are the ultimate opposites, coming from different backgrounds and harnessing contrasting powers. While Tandy can produce light in dagger form, Tyrone can create darkness. They learn to work together but their feelings complicate matters further (as always).
The trailer features flashes of their backstory, Tandy in ballet and Tyrone in basketball, Tyrone in trouble with the police while Tandy encounters distress at home. Although Tandy and Ty have a complicated romantic relationship in the comics as well, Freeform is definitely amping up the tension for its young adult audience, as seen with their awkward chance meeting.
In the comics, the two meet for the first time as runaways with no backstory, and get their superpowers after being injected with drugs by a criminal chemist. They become vigilantes and go after drug dealers for revenge and end up in Spider-Man's territory. The trailer seems to be straying a bit from the original story, showing a younger version of Tyrone saving young Tandy from drowning in a sinking car, him dressed in black and her in white.
Still, the show will have some connection to the larger MCU, as there's a brief glimpse of evil corporation Roxxon, which has been mentioned in the Iron Man films and other Marvel shows like Daredevil and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But like Daredevil and several other MCU shows, a more significant connection to the Avengers films is unlikely beyond an occasional reference to aliens invading New York.
Freeform ordered Marvel's Cloak & Dagger for a ten-episode run which is due out early next year.
