"Your family doesn't always have to be blood," Dave Bautista says in a new behind-the scenes promotional video for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. "They can be chosen." Despite consisting of a shirtless engine of destruction, a living sapling, a talking rodent, a former assassin, and a manchild with an obsession for 70' and 80's chart-toppers, it's hard to argue that the Guardians are anything but a poly-species, intergalactic family. The banter, the arguments, and even the quiet affectionate insults that weave their way through both the first movie and all of the trailers for its sequel certainly feel familiar to anyone who's ever had to silently remind themselves that you can't strangle your family, no matter how much you want to in the moment.

Vol. 2, according to James Gunn, is a movie that continues the Guardians' family saga: the first movie was about coming together, and this one is about being together. Plus, it has a moment where Chris Pratt claims to do all his own stunts, and a crewman has to stifle a laugh. It's pretty hilarious. Check it out:

It seems that this new movie will see the group splintered, as unlikely pairs are thrown together for various smaller missions. All of this is set against a backdrop of Peter Quill finally meeting his own dad, and learning that, if he wants to, he can probably grow an absolutely amazing Kurt Russell beard, too.

We're glad to see that James Gunn is doubling down on the family connections in this new movie. With Gunn on board to direct a third film in the series, it seems that we'll be getting to spend a lot more time with his version of the characters, and the fact that this new movie builds upon the roots of the earlier film by increasingly the fraught family dynamic makes us excited to see how characters like Nebula and Yondu fit in.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits US theaters May 5th, 2017.
