According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeff Goldblum, considered by many to be the quintessential thinking man's Nineties action star, is set to return as world-renowned mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm in Jurassic World 2. So, uh, get ready, right, for more charming, stuttering Goldblum Charm 'n Smarm (trademark pending).

The last time audiences saw Dr. Malcolm in the flesh was all the way back in Jurassic Park 2, but the character did have a brief cameo in Jurassic World on the dust jacket of a book, suggesting that the character is still active in the movie's wider universe.

While Goldblum didn't reprise his role for Jurassic World, he did return as David Levinson for Independence Day: Resurgence, another attempted revitalization of a classic franchise. After Resurgence bombed at the box office, we're guessing Goldblum figured he'd bet on the wrong horse, and quickly switched to the far more successful Jurassic World series.

But while Goldblum was a major character in the Independence Day sequel, Jurassic World 2 already has a powerhouse duo of lead actors in the form of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, which may mean that Dr. Malcolm will be pushed to the side a little in order for the movie to focus on the new characters introduced in Jurassic World.

In all fairness, this is probably for the best—Malcolm was just a side character in the original Jurassic Park, with the main story focusing on the far less interesting Alan Grant. Goldblum is more like the cherry on top that makes the whole thing classy—all we need is a smirk and a few witty quips about chaos theory while Chris Pratt does his action hero thing.

Jurassic World 2 hits US theaters on June 22nd, 2018.
