'The Defenders' Trailer Unites Marvel's Netflix Heroes For a Massive Brawl
Netflix
If you've been a fan of any of Marvel's hit Netflix shows, then stop what you're doing, because the first trailer for The Defenders is here and it demands your attention.

While Iron Fist and, to a lesser extent, season 2 of Daredevil didn't receive the same unanimous praise that Jessica Jones, Daredevil season 1, and much of Luke Cage have enjoyed, this first look at the team-up series suggests that Marvel's Netflix endeavors are back on the right track.

Maybe the incredibly clever use of Nirvana's Come as You Are colors things a little, but this trailer does such a perfect job of tying together The Defenders that it's hard to remember why anyone ever thought this might not turn out well.

It's a universally acknowledged fact that all Marvel heroes are, to quote Tony Stark, "full blown diva's," and it's not a surprise to see these guys trading insults and generally feeling threatened by each other. The interaction between Danny Rand (the immortal Iron Fist) and Luke Cage is particularly satisfying, as neither seem accustomed to coming across a problem that they can't solve by punching someone.

Of all the heroes in this trailer, it's hard not to focus on Danny Rand, if only because we haven't really seen him shine yet, and this sneak peek suggests that maybe, but maybe, we'll get the kind of gritty, tightly paced action drama that Iron Fist failed to deliver. Hopefully pairing him up with the other heroes, who've all had fantastic fight scenes (we still haven't forgotten Daredevil's hallway brawl) can help the Iron Fist keep up. The show should also give Marvel another shot at Elektra, one of the weaker points of Daredevil, who's returning again in a much more villainous fashion.

Perhaps that's the real strength of this trailer: it shows that Marvel is fully aware of the criticisms that have been leveled against Danny Rand ("the kid with a glowing fist") and his show's underwhelming fight scenes. It almost seems as if, as actor Finn Jones has been saying all along, his character is supposed to be deliberately pitiable in order for him to grow into a more effective superhero over the course of this new show.

The strength of this trailer revolves around the fact that the Defenders ain't no Avengers. Marvel's A-team can throw lightning bolts and fight aliens, while these guys struggle to throw punches against mobsters. If this is done well, as it appears to be, it'll make for very compelling viewing. It might even be enough to make us forgive Marvel's Netflix division for their less than stellar recent offerings, maybe.

The Defenders comes out August 18, 2017 on Netflix.
