'Kingsman 3' is Already Planned to Follow 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle'

Kingsman: The Golden Circle comes out this fall. And considering the first insane spy/action film Kingsman: The Secret Service took a wildly different direction from the original comics by Mark Millar (no montage of exploding heads in that one), there's no way to predict what'll happen in The Golden Circle beyond some hints from the trailer.

But however the movie ends, you can probably expect Eggsy (Taron Egerton) on some sort of sequel hook or unresolved plot thread, because director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) is already planning a third film full of the British charm and super-stylized violence that made the first film so successful. Speaking at a press event in London, Vaughn said he and co-writer Jane Goldman are setting up a trilogy if The Golden Circle does as well as the first film (and hopefully it will).

He specifically compared The Golden Circle to The Empire Strikes Back, saying that's the sort of quality sequel-that-ties-into-a-third-film he's aspiring to. Here's his full quote:
Opening quote
"By the end of this movie, no one will predict where Eggsy ends up. Weirdly, Kingsman 2, when we were writing it, we were thinking about Kingsman 3 as well, which was odd. Big idea for that. This is sort of the bridge, if we can pull this off and people go see it, to the other one."
Closing quote

If that's the case, Vaughn will need to make sure The Golden Circle doesn't end up being filler designed to simply set up a different movie. If the second movie coasts by on fun/absurd action sequences and Colin Firth's return, then it will still probably succeed, but the first film had an interesting enough story behind all the explosions and church fight scenes that it'd be disappointing if The Golden Circle doesn't have as solid of a plot.

As far as sequels go, Vaughn insists he's learning from the mistakes made with the mediocre Kick-Ass 2 - although to be fair, he didn't direct the sequel, he only served as a producer. But he's got a pretty impressive track record with the films he's directed, so we're not too worried.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle comes out September 22, 2017.
