'New Mutants' Casts Sunspot With '13 Reasons Why' Actor Henry Zaga

The New Mutants team is almost fully formed now, with the X-Men spinoff casting Henry Zaga of Netflix teen drama 13 Reasons Why to play the fiery mutant Sunspot. At this point, the casting for the first X-Men horror film is nearly done with.

Director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) broke the news on his Instagram account, something he does frequently considering how few announcements 20th Century Fox makes about the film. But he is the director, so it doesn't make the news any less official:

Rio's very own @zagahenry will play Sunspot  #newmutants #xmen #brazil

This makes Zaga the second Netflix actor brought onto the movie, a day after the news that Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton was in talks to play the Cannonball. Before that, Maisie Williams (Arya Stark on Game of Thrones) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) were also cast as mutants Wolfsbane and Magik respectively, leaving only Mirage and possibly Warlock left uncast.

Unlike Heaton or Taylor-Joy, Zaga doesn't have much horror experience - his minor role on Teen Wolf hardly counts - but since he's a relatively new actor, and since we have no idea what an X-Men horror movie actually looks like, it's far too early to pass any judgments there. Following the success of the gritty western film Logan, this is only the second time the franchise has branched out into a new genre.

For those unfamiliar with the X-Men character, Sunspot is Roberto da Costa, a Brazilian mutant with the power to absorb solar power and use it to set himself on fire. This will actually be Sunspot's second movie appearance, having appeared briefly in Days of Future Past played by Adan Canto, where he attacked some Sentinels in the background. It's notable that Sunspot is an Afro-Latino character, making this the second time a Latino actor was cast in the role instead (Zaga himself is from Brazil).

New Mutants is scheduled to come out April 13, 2018.
