First 'Marvel's Spider-Man' Footage Shows the Web-Slinger Battle Scorpion

While the constant Spider-Man movie reboots have grown tiresome - Marvel Studios really needs this summer's Spider-Man: Homecoming to revive the web-slinger's film career - cartoon reboots of superheroes are more normal, and Spider-Man cartoons have exists for nearly as long as the character himself.

Marvel's Spider-Man marks the fourth Spider-Man cartoon since the beginning of the 21st century, after MTV's short-lived Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, the fondly remembered Spectacular Spider-Man, and the recently ended Ultimate Spider-Man. But perhaps because Ultimate was tied too much to the cancelled Andrew Garfield movies (both began in 2012), Disney is revamping Peter Parker for the new MCU version.

Here's the first look, featuring the Scorpion trying to steal... something, while an inexperienced Spidey tries his best to hold the situation together:

Notable is that this includes Peter in a very similar makeshift costume to Tom Holland's cheap suit in the Homecoming trailers, but assuming this is the first episode (Scorpion has never been a climactic, end-of-season villain), the real suit is likely coming. Otherwise, this looks like a very no-frills Spider-Man cartoon that follows the age-old formula: animal-themed villain gains great power and uses it irresponsibly, and Spidey cracks jokes while he stops them, maybe killing his social life in the process. The subway card gag was pretty good, though.

The show was first announced at last year's New York Comic-Con, where not too much information was revealed. We still don't know much, beyond that veteran voice actor Fred Tatasciore was voicing Peter (replacing Drake & Josh star Drake Bell, who voiced Spidey in Ultimate).

But if you like classic Spider-Man stories, it looks like this new show is going to be more of that, perhaps with some other Marvel heroes guest-starring. Like how Homecoming seems to have as much Iron Man as Spider-Man himself.

Marvel's Spider-Man premieres this summer 2017 on Disney XD.
