Netflix Dismisses the 'Sense8' Fan Petitions to Renew the Show

Last week, Netflix pulled the plug on the Watchowski siblings' sci-fi show Sense8 only a month after releasing its second season. While the show was primarily cancelled for low viewership, its fanbase was still a dedicated one and people weren't happy.

After some impressive fan petitions and multiple Twitter campaigns pushing for a season three, Netflix finally released a statement that comes off as heartfelt and sympathetic, diluted somewhat by their staunch refusal to change their minds. A decision has been made, and Sense8 isn't coming back:

Actor Brian J. Smith, who played the sensate Will Gorski on the show, released a more genuinely sympathetic message. It can be read in full here, but the takeaway is that even if Netflix brought down the gavel, the fans rallying still meant a lot:

Opening quote
"Guys, there are no secrets here. I've been given the same reason for the cancelation that you have: viewership. As far as I'm aware there is no shady court intrigue that contributed to Netflix's decision, and I know that a lot of very smart people had to reach a consensus in order to pull the plug on a show that they had already invested an insane amount of capital in, even if that meant the story would never get an ending.

I think the saddest part of finishing a show this way is knowing that future audiences will never pick up a story they know has no resolution. It's seems like such a waste."
Closing quote

Netflix's cancellation of Sense8 does suggest a new trend from the company, which has only sparingly cancelled shows in the past, usually bad ones like Hemlock Grove and Marco Polo. But the Sense8 announcement came just after their canning of Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down, and while some cash cows like Stranger Things are perfectly safe, some smaller Netflix shows may be in a more precarious position than before.

And while the show always had mixed reviews despite its fan following, it does leave a gap in Netflix's original shows. Besides Stranger Things, they have few original sci-fi shows, and Sense8's racial diversity and LGBTQ-friendly storylines are difficult to come by in television. So even if the Watchowskis' show won't come back, hopefully Netflix has plans for a suitable replacement in their lineup.
