'Star Wars Battlefront II' Trailer Spans From 'The Force Awakens' to 'Phantom Menace'

2015's Battlefront was knocked for being thin on content and very thin on story, which might be less of a problem if it wasn't set in the in-depth world of Star Wars, which had 40 years worth of story to choose from. While we've already seen that Star Wars Battlefront II is correcting some of that, the expansive new trailer is still a relief to see.

The two-minute video starts with a look at all three incarnations of clone/stormtrooper from each movie trilogy, before moving into some gameplay footage set mostly around the "Assault on Theed" mission in The Phantom Menace's Naboo. All goes well for the Republic until Darth Maul steps in (no, not exactly canon), and then the video starts jumping around to include everyone from Yoda to Rey and Kylo Ren.

After a whole slew of more fights, including some improved-looking starfighter dogfights, the trailer ends on another look at new character Iden Versio, an Imperial officer. From what's currently known, Iden's story takes place in between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, explaining why the Emperor is appearing as a hologram in a doofy-looking droid - the real Emperor was indisposed due to his recent death above Endor.

Iden is apparently tasked with something called Operation Cinder, and while we won't know for sure what that means until we play the game's story, there's a good chance this could explain how the First Order comes to be (Star Wars did something similar back when they used The Force Unleashed game to explain the Rebellion's creation). The animated sequence looks really slick, though, so the story mode could be something to get excited about when the game finally hits shelves/Steam this fall.

Star Wars Battlefront II comes out November 17, 2017 on PS4, XBox One and PC.
