'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Photo Hints at the Return of Beric Dondarrion

While Jon Snow's resurrection last season on Game of Thrones was cool and all, that doesn't make him the authority on returning from the dead. After all, Beric Dondarrion has does that dozens of times.

Those who are eager for a fresh glimpse at the rapidly approaching seventh season of Game of Thrones have been treated to a selection of new photos that show off various characters from across Westeros. While most of them don't show anything the trailers didn't include, one photo hidden among the more familiar faces has none other than the king of Red Priest resurrections himself. And he looks to be up north.

It's possible Beric may have a bigger role in the new season if he's appearing in the press material, and Game of Thrones fans are freaking out. Beric (played by Richard Dormer) isn't the most noteworthy of characters, having appeared mostly in season 3 before returning briefly in season 6 to recruit The Hound (Rory McCann) into his Brotherhood Without Banners. But his presence among these photos, coupled with his newfound connection to fellow resurrectee Jon Snow, makes it seem as if there's going to be some serious otherworldly consequences to Snow's resurrection in the upcoming season.

After all, there's always a price to be paid for the use of magic, particularly forces potent enough to bring someone back from the dead. In the show, Beric has often spoken of the toll that death and resurrection puts on him, claiming to lose parts of himself after every return from beyond the grave. Parts of his soul, that is, not things like toes (although that can happen too, what with circulation issues while dead).

So perhaps his presence next season is to provide some kind of reckoning to Jon Snow, as he discovers the price he's paid in being resurrected. Or, alternatively, Beric might stand as some kind of prophetic warning of Snow's ultimate fate when the upcoming war reaches its climactic point. Either way, expect a good mix of magic and creepy sorcery in the next season of Game of Thrones, and don't be too surprised if Beric ends up making life (or, indeed, afterlife) very difficult for Jon Snow.

Game of Thrones season 7 premieres July 16, 2017 on HBO.
