Danny Elfman Will Compose the Score for 'Justice League'

Movie composer Danny Elfman is no stranger to DC movies, or superhero movies in general - he composed the haunting score for Batman in 1989 (one of his many collaborations with fellow oddball Tim Burton) as well as the original Spider-Man in 2002 and the recent Avengers: Age of Ultron.

And he's back in the genre again, because he's just become the new composer for Justice League, replacing previous composer Junkie XL. It's not immediately clear why Junkie XL is leaving the project, but the shakeup could have something to do with Justice League director Zack Snyder leaving the film after a family tragedy. Avengers director Joss Whedon stepped in to finish the movie and handle reshoots, and Whedon has worked with Elfman before (again, Age of Ultron), so perhaps he chose someone he was more comfortable with.

It's also possible that Whedon is attempting to make the film more fun, after the less depressing Wonder Woman became DC's biggest success. Elfman has been an upbeat composer throughout his career, even when scoring creepy movies for directors like Burton. While Junkie XL is known for heavier, atmospheric music like his work on Mad Max: Fury Road and Deadpool, and that heavier, atmospheric stuff is what most DC films have been known for up until now.

If you're unfamiliar with Elfman, you've probably heard his work before. Beyond Batman and Spider-Man, he composed the theme song for The Simpsons, music for multiple Tim Burton films like Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, and provided the singing voice for Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas, which he also composed music for - not everyone knows that the man can sing, having been the frontman of the 80s/90s band Oingo Boingo.

Justice League hits theaters November 17, 2017.
