'Transformers: The Last Knight' Featurette Shows Michael Bay's 3D Filming Strategy
Paramount
Seeing as the Transformers movies are mostly known for being explosive CGI showcases and not too much else, they might as well lean into it. And with Michael Bay's Transformers: The Last Knight coming out next week, his final Transformers movie is shaping up to be his biggest one yet.

In particular, the film is being shot fully with 3D cameras, whereas most big-budget films are still shot in 2D and converted to 3D in post-production. And even more notably, The Last Knight shot 98 percent of its scenes in full IMAX, which actually breaks a record - even if Avengers: Infinity War will break it again next year by shooting 100 percent of its scenes in IMAX.

Still, it's impressive work and shows that despite some misgivings about Bay, the man is good at what he does. To promote the movie and brag about all the impressive ways they filmed action scenes, Paramount Pictures released this featurette showing how Bay did it all:

Essentially, they strapped two IMAX cameras together side by side onto one rig, making an old fashioned yet very expensive 3D setup. It's something not every director would have enough money to pull off, but the Transformers films have made enough cash over the years that Bay is being allowed to go out with a bang. Even if most of his movies go out with a bang.

And of course, even if it's Bay's final movie (for now, he could easily change his mind), it won't be the final Transformers movie. A solo Bumblebee spinoff is in the works with Travis Knight of Kubo and the Two Strings, and Paramount already has release dates through 2019 for Transformers movies they haven't even announced yet. There will be many robots in disguise in the future, even if they'll have a high bar to reach (in terms of budget, at least) after Bay's IMAX 3D setup.

Transformers: The Last Knight comes out June 21, 2017.
