Marvel's 'The Defenders' Releases a Tough Looking Batch of New Posters
Netflix
The Defenders premieres this summer, and as the culmination of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, Netflix has to make sure all four stars can fit comfortably on any posters they release.

Well maybe not comfortably, as they're often shown cramped together, to reflect the fact that the four superheroes can't stand each other despite being forced to team up. The show's black-and-white first poster certainly reflects that, although it's otherwise not the greatest poster ever. While (from left to right) Charlie Cox, Mike Colter, Krysten Ritter, and Finn Jones all look intimidating, the whole thing otherwise looks a bit too much like a 90s sitcom lineup:

The big problem is that it doesn't look very gritty, something the fantastic first trailer did a much better job of (Nirvana's "Come as You Are" helped a lot). Considering the whole idea of The Defenders is that they're the street-level version of The Avengers, that street-level aesthetic is important, so it's good that the show also released some motion posters of the characters that look much better (again, Nirvana helps):

That looks more in line with Jessica Jones or Luke Cage or the other shows we've seen so far, which take place in back alleys and broken down offices. It's the bad guys like Kingpin, Cottonmouth, and Sigourney Weaver's new villain Alexandra who live in the expensive penthouse rooms, so that's not a look the good guys should be shooting for here.

But either way, if this show is as good as its predecessors (barring Iron Fist), The Defenders should be something to look forward to. Here are individual versions of those motion posters, in case you needed them:
