Final 'War for the Planet of the Apes' Trailer Hints at Tragedy for Caeser

All through the marketing push for War for the Planet of the Apes, we've been told that this movie is essentially going to be a Western.

The setting works - it's about a gruff old warrior who is protecting a settlement from chaotic forces, without any outside higher authority. All the trappings of the genre are here, and the movie's final trailer shows just how deep this particular rabbit hole goes. As if ripping plot points directly from classic cowboy movies, it seems that the movie will give Caesar (Andy Serkis) a personal tragedy to fuel his character development, as Woody Harrelson apparently murders his family behind a waterfall:

Hey, some tropes are popular because they're timeless - it's hard to argue with the emotional, humanizing impact of seeing a hero's family get canned by the main villain. It's interesting that Hollywood is so eager to give the Western a sci-fi twist at the moment, as if we're all kind of expecting our society to crumble a bit in the years to come.

Early trailers made it look like War for the Planet of the Apes will almost be a retelling of Logan, and that vibe continues here to some degree. With that in mind, it's not hard to guess where this story might be headed - especially as we've known since the beginning that everything will culminate with Charlton Heston crying on a beach, on some sort of "planet of apes."

As with a good road trip, though, this series of movies has been more about the journey than the destination, so while we can speculate fairly accurately about which characters will make it to the end, and which will end up in a pool of their own blood, what matters is the story that takes us there.

This is a Western, true and simple. Bows and arrows against guns, two groups of outsiders fighting for control of a wild frontier. Gruff old warriors squaring off, aware that only a single civilization can thrive, and either way, there'll be no place for either of them when all is said and done. Both Caesar and Harrelson's character have to decide just how far they're willing to go in order to protect their people, and whether it's worth sacrificing their humanity (or ape-ity?) to win the titular war.

Plus, this movie has funny-looking monkeys in it! You can't say that about Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven.
