'Star Wars Forces of Destiny' Cartoon Gets a Trailer and July Premiere Date
Disney
Earlier this year, Disney/Lucasfilm announced a new Star Wars cartoon series called Forces of Destiny, comprised of short animations following heroines from all throughout the saga - Rey, Leia, Padme, Jyn Erso, Clone Wars' Ahsoka and Rebels' Sabine Wren are among the characters slated to appear.

And now we also know when it's starting, as a press release stated that Forces of Destiny will begin next week. The shorts will first premiere on Disney's official YouTube channel starting July 3, although they'll eventually hit bigger screens when Disney Channel shows them a week later, on July 9.

As an "animated micro-series," each episode is only a few minutes long, similar to Genndy Tartakovsky's stylized Clone Wars cartoon back in 2003. While the art style is different here (Tartokovsky's style is pretty distinctive), this new one is bright and works just as well. Alongside that premiere date was a new trailer, so check that out below:

What's most impressive is the show's voice cast, as several characters are getting voiced by their original actresses. Narrated by Lupita Nyong'o in character as Maz Kanata from The Force Awakens, the show also has Daisy Ridley reprising Rey, Felicity Jones from Rogue One as Jyn Erso, and Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano. New talent was brought in to voice Leia, and Padme will be played by Clone Wars voice actor Catherine Tabor, because Natalie Portman probably isn't returning to Star Wars anytime soon.

Like the other cartoons, it's probably targeting a younger audience overall, but like the other cartoons, that doesn't mean adult Star Wars fans won't get sucked into the stories. Because it sounds like whatever your favorite movie is, there's a heroine from that one showing up (if your favorite movie is a prequel, then that's fine, just don't tell us). And of course, like every Star Wars series, there's going to be a toy line too.

You can catch the first episode of Star Wars Forces of Destiny on July 3, 2017.
