It's probably not best to share your hopes and dreams for the future of Game of Thrones with anyone—especially not online. You never know who might be listening in, preparing to crush your joy by murdering a character that you love.

Speaking in a recent interview with Entertainment WeeklyGame of Thrones showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff spoke about two characters that some fans are eager to see more of together: Brienne of Tarth and Tormund Giantsbane. Noting that there are those who'd like to see this pair romantically connected, Benioff and Weiss took glee in the opportunity to give them a tragic ending:

Opening quote
"It inspires us because we need to kill one of them now because there can't be a happy ending or any romantic connection on the show. But we're not going to tell you which one."
Closing quote

In fairness, this is probably just a joke—hopefully, at least. It's hard to really see a relationship forming between the two characters anyway, as Brienne is clearly incredibly uncomfortable with Tormund's infatuation.

While there'll be plenty of new alliances in the upcoming season, it's for the best that this particular pairing never develops into a serious relationship, not least because it might give viewers the misconception that the best way to win someone's affection is to stare creepily at them whenever the opportunity arises. Besides, from the sounds of it, this connection between the characters comes mostly from improvisation between the talented actors, Gwendoline Christie and Kristofer Hivju, rather than a plot thread created by the writers with the intention of a later payoff.

Opening quote
"It's not something you could ever write. It's just this moment where this guy is creeping out on her and he smiles in a way that makes her very uncomfortable and she just looks away. I saw it 150 times and every time it made me laugh; it's purely the two of them."
Closing quote

It seems that, in their suggestion of murder for the sake of tearing this couple apart, Weiss and Benioff are deliberately toying with us. We know that this season is going to be a horrendous emotional rollercoaster, so it remains to be seen whether the pair are bluffing or telling the truth. While we're all impatient to get the chance to see the new season of the show, it's worth steeling ourselves for the trauma that awaits us when Game of Thrones returns to television.

Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres on HBO on July 16th, 2017.
