Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is something of an anomaly among big budget blockbusters. With all the French Euros being thrown at this movie, EuropaCorp is betting a lot of money that director Luc Besson, the guy who made The Fifth Element, will be enough to sell an adaptation of an obscure French graphic novel from several decades ago.

Thankfully, the movie will have a little additional help in getting people to give it a good look, as the movie's American distributer, STX Entertainment, has announced that the movie's opening scene will play immediately before Spider-Man: Homecoming in participating theaters across America.

Apparently, the Valerian scene, which has not yet been released to the public, "details the creation of the film's Space Station Alpha" - in other words, it's a hefty chunk of exposition which they're hoping will hold everybody's attention.

At least, in what we have seen of the movie thus far, the exposition - and an obscure series with a lot of lore will likely have a lot - is generally accompanied by pretty, distracting visuals that show off all the aforementioned Euros that paid for this thing. With that said, here's a new clip that was also just released:

The classic Hollywood law of "show, don't tell" is clearly being ignored in this movie, in favor of cramming in as much worldbuilding as possible. But that's not necessarily bad, and for some science fiction fans, this should be an impressive reason to go see the movie - these visuals are utterly gorgeous, easily topping similar movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and even the newer Star Wars films. There's life and variety in this movie that you don't often see, even in big blockbuster sci-fi films.

The only question is whether pretty lights and a long, drawn out explanation of the creation of a space station will be enough to convince more casual Spider-Man fans that they should take a chance on a new property. There's probably an audience for this thing, but it might not be big enough to justify the enormous, studio-wrecking €197 million production cost that this movie has incurred.

We'll see when Valerian comes out July 21, 2017, while that first scene will come out with Spider-Man: Homecoming on July 7, 2017.
