We've been to almost every kind of convention imaginable, from PAX Prime to New York Comic-Con—we've been close enough to Steve Wozniak to touch him, and moderated more than one panel on the science of Star Wars. But hands-down, our favorite cons are the smaller, less-known ones, the ones that fly under the radar. Escape Velocity, the second annual event put on by the Museum of Science Fiction, is one of those up-and-comers that's in that sweet spot of being well-organized and high-profile enough to get some big-name guests, but not so big that it feels like a pressure cooker of nerds. Once you reach conga-line critical mass, you know your con has gotten too big.

On the other hand, check out last year's Escape Velocity, which had 2,700 attendees:

Escape Velocity isn't just pop culture—it's meant to be a hybrid sci-fi and science event, with demonstrations, lectures, and cool experiments. There are the standard panels and signings, but there's also a sci-fi film festival (which one of our new favorite indie films, Olfactory, will be a part of), a drone racing competition, and a stunt workshop. The guests reflect that division of science and sci-fi: legendary sci-fi writer Joe Haldeman (The Forever War) is one of the guests, as is Cas Anvar from The Expanse, along with the creator of the Klingon language, Marc Okrand, and NASA astrophysicist C. Alex Young.

Here are some of the events we're looking forward to:
