Marvel's 'New Warriors' Show Casts Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl

Freeform's upcoming Marvel comedy show, New Warriors, has officially been cast, and there's a long list of actors who'll be playing the various weird and wonderful characters (often with only slightly useful powers) that make up the team.

Most of the characters are rather obscure, save for one, as you can likely tell from Marvel's press release: Derek Theler will play Mister Immortal, Jeremy Tardy is Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy will be Speedball, Matthew Moy is the face of Microbe, and Kate Comer will play Debrii. These are all no doubt great casting choices, but the character folks are most interested in would be Squirrel Girl. As, let's face it, the big draw for the New Warriors show, Squirrel Girl will be played by Milana Vayntrub.

Vayntrub recently played Sloane Sandburg on This is Us, but in case that's not your thing, you probably know her from somewhere else: she's Lily from the AT&T ads.

Beyond her TV career, Vayntrub proved her acting chops on the YouTube channel LivePrudeGirls years before she got famous for being an AT&T salesperson. As a comedian who is incredibly proficient, and who bears more than a passing resemblance to the comic book version of Squirrel Girl, this is a pretty solid casting choice.

Plus, on an unrelated note, Vayntrub was a political refugee who fled the USSR to America as a child, and who regularly campaigns for the rights of refugees, having started the #CantDoNothing movement to aid in the Syrian crisis. She's not just funny, she's also an awesome human being.

As Squirrel Girl, aka Doreen Green, she'll play an oddball superhero with the power to communicate with squirrels. Since New Warriors is being marketed as a more comedic show, everyone else has similarly bizarre abilities: Speedball can throw "kinetic balls of energy" that he can't control, Mister Immortal can't die (but hasn't actually tested it, so he could just be a normal human), Microbe can talk to germs, and Debrii has very mild telekinetic powers.

Some people might be disappointed that Anna Kendrick, long pegged for the role of Squirrel Girl by fans (and Edgar Wright), won't be stooping to television to bring Doreen to life. In truth, though, it's hard to think of anyone more perfect to play one of Marvel's most popular characters, and it's exciting to think of just how amazing New Warriors will be with Vayntrub in the spotlight.

Marvel's New Warriors is currently scheduled to come out sometime in 2018 on Freeform.
