'A Wrinkle in Time' Trailer Shows Disney's Surreal New Adventure Movie
< >
While Disney is spending this weekend at the D23 expo, showing off the vast repository of new stuff they're working on, they finally released the first trailer for their sci-fi/fantasy film A Wrinkle in Time, based on the children's novel by Madeleine L'Engle.

And this trailer looks really, really strange, in a good way. Coming from director Ava DuVernay (Selma, 13th), the story follows young Meg Murry (Storm Reid) as she searches for her missing scientist father (played by Chris Pine, in a weird but not unwelcome casting choice) with the help of three planet-hopping beings named Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which (played by Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah respectively).

If that all sounds like a trip to you, then you have no idea. Check out the trailer below:

While some viewers may have trouble shaking the image of Oprah convincing a child to become a warrior, and others may be distracted by the bass heavy, overdramatic Eurythmics remix, this looks like it could be Disney's most ambitious project in ages, especially during a time when they're otherwise happy rehashing live-action versions of Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin. Whether or not Disney can pull it off is another story entirely (Tomorrowland was also ambitious), but this is a great start so far.

And fittingly for a movie where the characters hop around planets, the visuals are all over the place. Oprah and her two partners are dressed in extravagant clothes that wouldn't look out of place in The Wizard of Oz, while Chris Pine's character is seemingly trapped in a morbidly dark dungeon where some sort of typical "great evil" is residing. And a final scene set in some warped, Tim Burton-esque recreation of the suburbs was legitimately creepy, so DuVernay certainly isn't limiting herself in terms of tone or atmosphere.

Speaking at D23 after revealing the trailer, DuVernay commented:

Opening quote
"I saw myself in it. And I saw so many different kinds of people in it and personalities and I thought, gosh, if I could bring my idea of it to the classic novel, maybe we can make something new, And the only place to do that is at Disney. A family story wrapped in an epic adventure where you see worlds you've never seen before-it's the perfect place."
Closing quote

A Wrinkle in Time comes out March 9, 2018.
