'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' Will Return to Theaters This Fall
< >
Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the first of his many alien movies and arguably his most iconic (although some folks will vouch for E.T. instead), is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

And to celebrate, Sony is returning Close Encounters to theaters after its initial run way back in 1977, if only for a limited time. For the first week of September 2017, a remastered 4K version of Spielberg's director's cut will be screening in a limited number of movie theaters around the United States. See Sony's "new" trailer for the movie below - obviously there's no new footage, but the old footage certainly looks nicer than before:

A much more vague teaser came out at the beginning of the month, causing some to worry that the film was actually getting rebooted instead of re-released. This thankfully isn't the case, as a reboot of Close Encounters of all things would upset many more people than Sony would be expecting, although somehow those types of remakes still make money. But either way, unless Sony gets any funny ideas, this seems to be a straightforward remastering of Spielberg's favorite cut of the original.

In case you are somehow unfamiliar with Close Encounters of the Third Kind - and even if you haven't seen it, you've definitely seen stories inspired by it - it follows an simple Indiana worker named Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) who has a close encounter with a UFO, which sets off a chain of events as several different characters deal with the impending alien contact in different ways.

If the "Third Kind" in the title ever confused you, the new trailer helpfully explains: a "first kind" is just a UFO sighting, and the "second kind" is evidence. And of course, the "third kind" is contact, and the movie's about close encounters of that kind.

It's a classic sci-fi movie, so if you've never seen it before, there's no better time than this September. And of course, the 4K remastering is coming to Blu-ray later that month on September 19.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind will be in theaters for the week of September 1, 2017.
